As laser marking is both permanent and non-toxic, implants are laser marked with logos, serialization or barcode to give each its own unique identification. Laser marks are non-intrusive and free from corrosion mechanism.
Moreover implants must be smooth to eliminate the possibility of tissue damage or bacterial growth.
To assure the tracking of instruments used in surgical procedures a number of health care organizations are now permanently marking each instrument with a data-matrix code. The marking also provides clear and permanent identification of the manufacturer.
